5% Borated UHMW Polyethylene Sheet
Ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is defined by ASTM as “polyethylene with molecular weight over three million (weight average). Our UHMWPE products have a molecular weight range from 1 ~ 9 million. Being chemically similar to HDPE, UHMWPE shows the typical polyethylene characteristics of chemical inertness, lubricity, and electrical resistance, while its very long, substantially linear chains provide greater impact strength, abrasion resistance, toughness, and freedom from stress cracking. However, this very high molecular weight also makes it difficult to process the polymer by standard moulding techniques. Compression molding of sheets and ram extrusion of profiles are the normal manufacturing techniques.
Borated Polyethylene sheet is a product specially designed for nuclear and radiation shielding applications. Its neutron shield properties have been tested and certified. As same as other shielding materials, this material can produce Y-rays under the action of neutrons, and the Y-ray dose is second grade relative to the shielding neutron. Borated polyethylene is low and lightweight, so it is the best material to replace lead to shield neutrons. The boron content is from 2% to 20% by weight according to applications and customers’ requirements.
